Biography
Jennifer Durst
I was born and raised in Kapuskasing, a small Northern Ontario Town. I quickly learned a deep-seated respect and admiration for nature from my family as well as the stunning landscapes around me. My family also instilled a sense of imagination and creativity in me and I was always finding beauty in small details such as the frost on a windowpane, the dew on a fallen leaf, or the bark of a tree. These qualities only grew with time and I enjoyed expanding them through creative games with my younger sister and brother or during arts and crafts.
I first took interest in photography as a young child when I received a point and shoot camera for Christmas one year. It took me a while to master the art of holding the camera still while taking a picture so that the person's head would be in frame as well as their body. I became further adept during a high school photography class. I enjoyed the thoughtful process of capturing the right composition and had fun developing the photos in the dark room.
When I left for Peterborough to attend Trent University (B.A hons, B.Ed) I purchased my first digital camera and fell into the routine of both studying and capturing my new environment. I now live in Toronto and am attending York University (B.S.W) and have moved up to a digital SLR camera, which I love taking out for walks with me. I enjoy exploring textures and light as well as capturing the small details that may go otherwise unnoticed. My subject is primarily nature though I also enjoy more urban elements. I find the effects of nature on the urban to be somehow touching and I enjoy the textures and stories that are found in an abandoned house or a crumbling brick wall.
I live with my partner, our three dogs, and two cockatiels who I also spend a great deal of time documenting, of course! Emily and the dogs are also usually my patient companions on our various hikes. Artistically speaking I also have a lifelong love of writing, sewing, cross stitching, and any other form of artistic endeavours that let me express myself.
